Chalakudy is a town and a municipality in the Thrissur district, Kerala, India. The name "Chalakudy" is derived from the word "Shalakudy", meaning a place where sacrifices are made for good cause. Chalakudy Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala state in southern India.

The Chalakudy block consist of the following panchayats Kadukutty Grama Panchayat, Koratty Grama Panchayat, Meloor Grama Panchayat, Kodassery Grama Panchayat, Pariyaram Grama Panchayat, Kodakara Grama Panchayat and Athirapilly Grama Panchayat. The Chalakudy River has a length of about 130 kms and a catchment area of about 1448km². It is a sixth largest river in Kerala and out of the total catchment, about 300 km² area lies in Tamil Nadu State.

The river originates from the Anamalai Hills of the Western Ghats and flows through highly varied geologic and geomorphic terrains. It merges with the river Periyar at Elanthikkara, before debouching into the Vembanad Lake. The river is formed by the confluence of 5 major tributaries, viz, Parambikulam, Sholayar, Kuriarkutti, Karappara and Anakayam. The Sholayar and Parambikulam tributaries originate from Tamil Nadu State and the other three from Kerala. The Chalakudy River hosts several water falls, of which the falls at Peringalkuthu and Athirapilly are the major ones. The important reservoirs in the river basin are Peruvarippalam reservoir, Tunakadavu reservoir, Parambikulam reservoir, Sholayar reservoir and Peringalkuthu reservoir.

Chalakudy River (half a kilometer from town, to the south on NH-47 highway); it has one of the highest fish diversities in Kerala (second in the whole India). Chalakudy is conveniently connected by air, rail and road networks. Located very close to the National Highway 47, it is 30 km south of Thrissur, 49 km north of Ernakulam, and 22 km from Cochin International Airport (Nedumbassery), which is accessed by many major airlines, including Emirates. Chalakudy railway station is just two kilometers away.
